The specific content of the examinations is unknown. Candidates are advised to become familiar with the subject matter discussed in this learning module. All of the information needed for a complete preparation for these examinations is presented on this website. Take a look at the dedicated learning modules on foot and ankle tumors. Formulate a list of the 5 most common tumors of each of the three types a noted here. Then, review the materials on each specific listing page of the tumors on your list. You may want to create a large spreadsheet for the 15 tumors. For each, add a column the items shown here. As you read and learn, jot down a few notes in each column for each tumor. Use your spreadsheet to refresh your memory of these tumor facts before you begin your examination. Good luck!
There are multiple examinations and tracks for certification, which will not be individually addressed in this document. The American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS) has had two certification tracks: one in Foot Surgery and the other in Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery. The American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM) offers a comprehensive board qualification and certification process in podiatric medicine and orthopedics.
The ABPS examinations study guide states that questions covering "neoplastic (primary or metastatic) conditions" may appear on the foot exam and "neoplasms and infections" may appear on the rearfoot/ankle exam. The ABPOPPM written exam study guide states that the exam will include "hematology / oncology" material.
Since no specific information in available, the recommended approach is to focus on the 5 most common bone, soft tissue, and metastatic lesions of the foot and ankle. For each, the following characteristics should be familiar to the examinee:
The plain xray appearance of these tumors
The epidemiology of these tumors, pt age, sex, likely location
The clinical presentation, pertinent exam findings
The appropriate advanced imaging modalities used to complete the work-up
A differential for each lesions that includes 3 or 4 possibilities
The biopsy process, planning, approach, techniques, potential complications
The histopathological features of these tumors
The appropriate treatment and prognosis for these tumors
