Innovative Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures for Bone Tumors

updated 12/30/06

Laparoscopic Techniques

Laparoscopic techniques have opened a new chapter in surgical care. These procedures are now routine for the removal of the gall bladder, for the treatment of appendicitis, and repair of hernias. Patients have smaller incisions, surgeons have better visualization of the procedures, and outcomes are improved.

In certain relatively uncommon cases, laparoscopic techniques may be applied to the treatment of bone tumors. At the present time this procedure is only applied to highly selected cases where other treatments are ineffective or impractical.

The authors, in conjunction with their highly accomplished surgical colleagues who have pioneered many of these procedures, have used laparoscopic spinal surgery techniques to treat a benign spinal tumor located in the lumbar vertebra of a young woman.

More than two years after surgery, the patient has significant improvement in her pain and is highly active in equestrian sports. The authors anticipate that laparoscopic techniques will become more common in treating bone and soft tissue tumors.
