Case of the month 3/99 - continued What is the name of the radiographic finding shown at the arrow?
Scroll down for the answer and a discussion.
The "fallen leaf sign" is a radiographic feature found in UBC's. It represents a fragment of the cortex dislodged by the fracture that falls into the cyst. It may fall directly to the bottom or distal end of the cyst, or as in this case become lodged midway down the cyst. This sign is strongly suggestive of UBC when found in a lesion with the right appearance in the right age child. It is not diagnostic by itself. Click here for a complete discussion of UBC.
