| Osteoid
osteomas are common, small, benign, and usually solitary lesions that can
be quite painful. These lesions can be treated conservatively with
aspirin if the the risk of pathologic fracture is small. However,
conservative treatment often requires a prolonged course requiring frequent
dosing of aspirin. After discussion with the patient and his parents
they felt it would be difficult for an active adolescent to reliably follow
through with a protracted course of medication, and they opted for surgical
treatment. He successfully underwent careful curettage of the lesion,
ensuring that the nidus of the osteoid osteoma was entirely removed to prevent
recurrence.
